Summary

Dreamily written and harrowing, all at the same time。

The lack of self evaluations are they a curse or a blessing? What a read!!!

Absolutely fathoming that this book has been so popular。 Some of the writing is lovely in its descriptions of a Cape Cod paradise but the characters are so self-absorbed, some downright repellant and others so wishy-washy that they manage to spoil the lovely setting。 Most of all the central character, Elle, is the most narcissistic and immature of the lot。 Even when she suffers and genuinely deserves sympathy, her insistence that the entire world revolves around her and her pain is so alienating Absolutely fathoming that this book has been so popular。 Some of the writing is lovely in its descriptions of a Cape Cod paradise but the characters are so self-absorbed, some downright repellant and others so wishy-washy that they manage to spoil the lovely setting。 Most of all the central character, Elle, is the most narcissistic and immature of the lot。 Even when she suffers and genuinely deserves sympathy, her insistence that the entire world revolves around her and her pain is so alienating。 A big meh。 。。。more

3。5 ish。 Parts of the book were great but parts were slow or hard to read。

Jane S

Super depressing but very well-written and a page turner。

Ariel

Unlikeable and very dysfunctional characters。Pretty depressing to read in the middle of the night。

Great writing and story

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2This was an absolute page-turner that I couldn’t put down。 I got lost in its beautiful language, lush descriptions, and fast-paced storytelling。 At times, I felt like my stomach was going to drop right out of my body, and at other times, I found my heart breaking。 In addition, there was some very smart, witty dialogue that made me laugh out loud。 It’s definitely not a book for everyone and the flowery language when describing the setting was overkill at times, but it’s one I’ll be thi ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2This was an absolute page-turner that I couldn’t put down。 I got lost in its beautiful language, lush descriptions, and fast-paced storytelling。 At times, I felt like my stomach was going to drop right out of my body, and at other times, I found my heart breaking。 In addition, there was some very smart, witty dialogue that made me laugh out loud。 It’s definitely not a book for everyone and the flowery language when describing the setting was overkill at times, but it’s one I’ll be thinking about for quite some time。 。。。more

I loved a lot of things about this book — one of my favorites was how the back-and-forth in time rhythm of the book just works really well and feels seamless。 The characters were flawed and felt real and I found myself torn, just as the main character was, about the best course of action for all of them。 A great end-of-summer read!!

I feel like I was supposed to like this more than I did。 Still slightly confused as to how it ended?

Didn’t enjoy this book at all。 Couldn’t wait to be done。

Pam Fleischer

I enjoyed observing the characters’ thoughts and feelings。 For me it was a study of the human psyche and choices made。 Sometimes it seems hard to understand why people choose what they do, but from an open mind you realize that is the only choice they think they have。

4。5⭐️-Beautiful writing, a lush sense of atmosphere and characters with enough depth and realistic dialogue that they come to life in front of your eyes。 This novel about growing up, the different types of love, regrets, and what ifs is impeccably done。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really was enjoying it and it kept me interested but I feel like I’m missing an end chapter or something。 I know it was the authors intent to keep us guessing but it ruined it for me。 There were also things that seemed odd to me that I had to double check like Peggy’s drowning (why was this never brought up again) and what was the story behind jonas’s mother and her being so intolerable。 It felt like a tv series that you like that ends on a cliff hanger, but never gets renewed so you don’t kno I really was enjoying it and it kept me interested but I feel like I’m missing an end chapter or something。 I know it was the authors intent to keep us guessing but it ruined it for me。 There were also things that seemed odd to me that I had to double check like Peggy’s drowning (why was this never brought up again) and what was the story behind jonas’s mother and her being so intolerable。 It felt like a tv series that you like that ends on a cliff hanger, but never gets renewed so you don’t know how it ends。 。。。more

WASP ennui is my jam and this is a bit too much WASP ennui, even for me。

Rounding up from 2。5。 Unlikeable characters and disturbing content。

I had very high hopes for this book such high ratings and praise ?? What?? I was immediately turned off by the characters and the emotional abuse, physical abuse of children and the sex and absolutely no redeeming characters at all。 "Riveting family drama" Good Grief take a hard pass on this one。 Will thankfully return this book to the library。 I had very high hopes for this book such high ratings and praise ?? I loved this book。 It reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing in the sense that the setting was so vivid, almost a character in itself。

Violet Lewin

(TW: SA, rape, incest, domestic violence, abuse) this book。 Woah。 First of all this book was full of deep and dark emotions。 Yet the sneaking around and the love triangle made it dangerously easy to read for me。 It is the first book I have ever read in one sitting and I am going to bed feeling as thought I have loved many lives。

First of all, this book has super difficult and disturbing content and should really have a trigger warning for those that have suffered particular types of sexual or family trauma。 That aside, I really enjoyed the author’s storytelling and was moved by the imagery of the Back Woods and by the winding timeline as the pieces all came together。

Michelle

Great book!

Barb

Good plot premise but I didn’t enjoy the way novel was structured。 A LOT of back and forth in time and hard to keep the characters straight。 The author tells you how it ends about two-thirds of the way through。 But I finished it anyway。

Patti Stewart-Garbrecht

I loved the story。 But I wish I had read a hard copy rather than reading in on my Kindle。 There was so much back and forth between past and present (even in the same chapter)。 I was sometimes unsure how far back I to the past we were without having to undertake the tedious task of flipping pages on a Kindle。 I also felt there were too many irrelevant characters。 I found myself trying to remember who Becky was or Andrea。 But it was a wonderful story that brought back many childhood memories。

Reg

It was ok, a lot of very detailed writing that can get boring after a while but definitely shows skill。 I found myself getting confused with the back and forth and how random the jumps seemed。 There didn’t seem to ever be a rising action to the story。 I kept waiting for something to happen and then it ended。 3/5 simply because she is a good writer when using metaphors and details that paint a picture。

Becky

I loved it! Deep characters, and I was so torn about who to choose。 complicated family history。 Excellent book。

Beautifully written the leaps between time are seamless and easy to follow。 I loved this book and didn’t want it to end。 My heart hurts for all of the sadness and wrong doings each of the characters commit that lead to another’s pain and suffering。 A must read for this that loved Where the Crawdads Sing。

Christine

This definitely was a page turner, but still trying to decide if I liked it or not。

I can't say much about this due to spoiler issues except that I really grew to dislike the protaganist。 And I am also very sick of the current vogue in books for the timeline to go back and forth all over the place。 Plus the denouement was too long。 It kept my attention, for sure, but it became a hate read。 I can't say much about this due to spoiler issues except that I really grew to dislike the protaganist。 And I am also very sick of the current vogue in books for the timeline to go back and forth all over the place。 Plus the denouement was too long。 It kept my attention, for sure, but it became a hate read。 。。。more
